Rachael Ray; Losing Belly Fat March 5 2009
On Thursday March 5, 2009 Rachel Ray had a portion of her show dedicated to losing belly fat. What the show discussed was mentioned during a segment titled Human Lab. The show started off with this segment and three weight loss items or gizmos were unscientifically tested and then reviewed. The target of these weight loss devices was what was referred to as belly fat, pot belly, muffin tops and post baby pooch. All of these terms were in reference to the fat a woman would have if they were about twenty or so pounds overweight.
There were three ladies who each tested an individual product, also a Dr. Keri Peterson was on hand to discuss the products.The findings were as follows;
Karen was 39 yers old and had a 3year old baby and the product she tested was Rodial Tummy Tuck Cream. This was just a cream that was rubbed in a clockwise motion on the tunny area and this was to help eliminate the flab. After a few weeks of use, Karen said that it did firm her up up and was happy with the results. With minor research we were shocked with the very expensive cost and disappointed with the fact that they are out of stock for a few weeks. Karen further stated she did not exercise and lost 6″. Dr. Peterson said that the cream had alot of good vitamins and antioxidants and moisturizers added. Dr. Peterson said there was nothing in the cream that would help with belly fat. The only possible explanation was that the skin tightened up which may have pulled back the muscles.
Yasmin who was 30 years old tried a product called Belly Banditand she was happy with the results. This was basicaly a wrap that was strectched around her belly with the intention of forcing the muscles to tighten up. Yasmin said the wrap was comfortable and easy to use. She stated she had lost 3″ from her waist. The doctor said the only explanation of it working could be the fact that it forced different muscles to work together and that would cause the belly area to tighten up and improve.
The final lady was Michelle who went and was connected to a space age machine called SX4000Ultimate Body System that sent tiny electric chrges through the fat fat to the muscles. This caused the muscles to contract which in effect, was like doing situps. The doctor said it would just be alot cheaper to go do some situps.
The end result of all 3 of these products was that the ladies were happy. All of them looked great and acted as if the product they tested was a weight loss miracle. My one question is what is the business relationship Rachell Ray has with these products? Were they paying to be on the show?
At the end of the segment Dr. Peterson said that all of the products had no proof in science for what they claimed they did for weight loss. She went on to state that there is no such thing as spot reduction when trying to lose weight. That one statement really put the brakes on any of the claims. What was really slick was the fact that Rachell Ray never really said whether the products worked or did not work. The people who used them said it did work, but Rachall just acted like the obedient host saying nothing critical or definitive about the products. She kept a safe distance from using those words. This entire episode appeared to be just another way to get the money out of the pockets of those desperate to lose weight.

I agree with Dr Peterson’s statement that there is no such thing as spot reduction. You need to take a holistic approach. That is, you need to do some form of cardio for 30 minutes a day, three days per week. Then, you need to do total body strength training three days per week. Yes, situps, crunches, and all these sorts of devices can help enhance the look of your ab muscles and skin, but you need to burn the fat that covers your muscles and makes your skin look like cottage cheese. Then, and only then can you get maximum results.
Very valuable information on a very important topic. Belly fat – Too much belly fat can be very unhealthy. Belly fat is a major indicator of metabolic syndrome, a serious condition that can double your risk of premature death from a variety of things like a stroke or heart disease.
I must say that I am intrigued by this post. No I am not a fan of those lose weight, get flat belly short cuts but this gives an insight to the length people go to have the so called perfect body
I saw the show! I was left wondering the same thing…how much are these companies paying to be sponsored by Rachel Ray?

I think celebrities run the risk of losing their credibility when they try to hock these quick fix products that prey upon people’s desires to skip the arduous task of working off the pounds by sheer dedication, discipline and determination. Otherwise we’ll continue to have these items thrown at you on television and media icons pushing them like an opiate.
it is completely possible to use a cream to tighten your skin, but it definitely won’t remove belly fat. A lot of modern skin care products actually use caffeine in creams because it is a vasodilator and works to constrict the skin. I still find it hard to believe that she lost 6 inches??
interesting topic, i usually like what rachel has to say so this could be a great post, i look forward to reading it.
