Medifast Product Review: Chocolate Pudding

For this Medifast Product Review I am taking a look at my experiences with the chocolate pudding.  Before I even get into talking about the Medifast version of chocolate pudding let me tell you that I am a pudding connoisseur and I love it and used to eat it every single day.  My wife and I would have the 60 calorie type and sit in front of the television every night enjoying our daily share of various pudding flavors.  Despite eating some almost daily we always fell back to our favorite flavor, which was some version or combination that involved the flavor chocolate.  So as you get into this review of my opinion of Medifast chocolate pudding you need to understand that my pudding standards are higher than most people may have.  When it comes to chocolate flavored pudding my taste standards are more than likely incredibly high.  I love chocolate and I really love chocolate pudding!

I have eaten my fair share of Medifast chocolate pudding and I have some good and bad news for this short review.  I must admit that the flavor of the pudding is awesome because it does have a rich chocolate flavor, but that is really where the “awesomeness” ends.  Despite how great the flavor tastes I must confess that the problem is not with the flavor it is with the texture or more accurately…the lack of solidness.

(Update: After much experimentation I have been able to achieve a more pudding like consistancy by adding slightly less water.  Please refer to the way I prepare Medifast Vanilla Pudding as the method is the same and the consistency is much better.VANILLA ARTICLE LINK: CLICK HERE)

I have experimented with different quantities of the water added and I have always come up with the short fall that exists because it never really gets that soft pudding solidness that I have always had in pudding choices.  The Medifast chocolate pudding never really thickens and for that reason I have always felt deprived of how the pudding should taste.  Do not get me wrong because the flavor is spot on and really tastes great but the issue I mention is that it feels like I am eating chocolate soup because it never becomes firm.

I have made it and let it sit a few hours, I have let it sit overnight and I even have let it sit in the fridge for a couple of days and I have never been thrilled with the lack of firmness the chocolate pudding consistency.  I will further admit that after I let it sit overnight it did thicken up somewhat, but yet it still falls short of my high pudding expectations.  Just for the record I will also tell you that after letting it sit for a few days it thickened up so much it was not enjoyable at all.  I do not recommend it sitting your fridge more than one day because it transforms itself into something I did not enjoy at all.  It became very unpalatable and sort of liquid lumpy.

If I had to write this as a quick review of Medifast chocolate pudding it would be as such:

Medifast Chocolate pudding has a high degree of rich chocolate flavor but it more closely resembles chocolate soup when eating.  If you do not mind eating a pudding that does not assume a solid mass, you will enjoy the treat.  If you need to have your pudding somewhat firm, you may be disappointed.  Overall the flavor is great, it is just the consistency that ends up being disappointing.

Will I order Medifast chocolate pudding again? More than likely I will not… but only because I do not personally enjoy great tasting chocolate soup. :)

One morning in my sleepy haze I accidentally ripped the pudding pouch open and made my “shake”. Let me tell you, that shake was the best one I ever had. Very creamy and chocolatey. Puts all the other “real” shake flavors to shame in taste and consistency. From now on, I’ll be using pudding for my shakes in the morning. YUM-O.

I won’t eat the chocolate pudding unless I freeze it for an hour or two. And then it is more like a fudgicle. I usually freeze it for a few hours before work and have it in a cooler for few hours. By the time I eat it, it is the perfect consistency which is half frozen. And I like the chocolatey flavor.
