Is Medifast a Fad Diet?
Is Medifast a fad diet?
If you are here trying to decide whether or not Medifast is a fad diet…you have come to the right place because I have been using Medifast for one year and have learned quite a bit about what Medifast is…and what Medifast is not. What I will say is that Medifast is not a fad diet in any way what-so-ever. To qualify this answer let me first take a definition of what a fad diet is all about. The definition of what a fad diet is as follows;
“a reducing diet that enjoys temporary popularity”
What you need to know about Medifast is that it has been around longer than almost any established diet plan on the market today. A well worn Medifast statement is that it has been recommended by more than 20,000 doctors since 1980. Since it is a very simple statement that can be verified anywhere, it is quite evident that Medifast has been around way too long to be classified as a fad diet. Since the definition of a fad diet involves a diet that is short-lived, and since Medifast has been around well over 30 years…it can hardly be even remotely considered to be a fad diet. In short, Medifast has an established history i
Although the Medifast Diet has been in existence since 1980, the knowledge and experience behind the concept of this meal replacement program goes as far back as 50 years. Medifast is owned by Jason Pharmaceuticals, Inc. of Owings Mills, MD and was originally founded by William Vitale, MD.
The Medifast method is simple meal replacement. It is not like any other other diet on the market. Medifast provides life changing behavior modification programs (it has changed the life of my wife and I) and products that support their customers through weight loss and into weight maintenance. The Medifast program teaches people how to lose weight and keep it off for life. That is why the diet is more successful for significantly overweight people, like I used to be, because the longer you are on the diet, the more you learn about healthy eating habits, meal preparation, portion control, nutritional information and weight management.
So…without going into anymore detail about whether or not Medifast is a fad diet, let me just leave you with the definition and a few more Medifast facts that will dispel any doubt you may have remaining.

(136 pounds divided by 17 months equals 8 pounds a month. 8 pounds per month divided by 4.2 weeks a month equals 1.9 pounds per week. / Yes, on average there is 4.2 weeks per month when talking about a year.)
Now check out Weight Watchers and you will note that they too only offer you the ability to lose as follows…and again I quote from their own website….”People following the Weight Watchers plan can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week.” Once again you will note that they are just like the status quo of the weight loss world and offer their ability to help you lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. That is all they offer on their success stories and that tiny fact makes them just like all of the other mediocre weight loss plans in the world today.
Weight Watchers Official Website

Medifast Diet: Explained and Reviewed
Before an explanation of The Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan can be explained, it is essential that the reader understands that Medifast is essentially a meal replacement program. A Medifast Meal is often referred to as a PCMR, which means a Portion Controlled Replacement Meal. Although there are other Medifast Meal Plans available we will only be discussing, in detail, the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan.

The Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan is the most commonly used weight loss plan that is used by those people that utilize Medifast as a way to lose weight. Although there are variations of the Medifast weight loss program, the most common plan the majority of people using Medifast, is the 5 & 1. Variations of the Medifast Program will differ for categories of individuals such as diabetics or nursing mothers. What needs to be understood when discussing any Medifast Plan is that the number distinguishes how many Medifast Meals are being used as replacement meals, or PCMR’s. The 5 & 1 signifies that there will be 5 Medifast Meals being utilized as replacement meals while the 1 signifies that there will be one meal eaten daily, that is not provided by Medifast.
The essential differences of using Medifast to lose weight are quite numerous and distinctive from any other weight loss plan available to the general public, in America today. (Medifast is not sold outside of the borders of The United States as of this moment, although there are plans to grow globally.) The obvious differences of the Medifast Weight Loss Program are as follows;
Approved by over 30,000 doctors
Approved and used by Johns Hopkins
Clinically proven with peer review
Fastest, non-surgical, medically approved weight loss method available to the public
There is no other weight loss program available on the market today in The United States that has been approved to be used by more doctors than the Medifast (5 & 1) Weight Loss Program. There is a steady rise in physicians that are recognizing the effectiveness of using Medifast Meal Replacements as an effective tool in combating obesity. Over thirty years ago the only way to use Medifast was through a doctor’s prescription. Today Medifast is available without a prescription, but yet there are an increasing number of physicians that recommend using a Medifast Meal Plan for sustainable weight loss.
Anyone that knows anything about the medical field will hold a deep respect for the fact that the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan has been used and is approved by Johns Hopkins. Medifast has been utilized in clinical studies and the results of the overall program have been shown to be effective. Those results have been peer reviewed and the quality of the program has been held to the highest standards of proven effectiveness.
If one were to compare the Medifast 5 & 1 program with other popular weight loss programs on the market today, such as Weight-Watchers or NutriSystem, there is a considerable difference in expected results. While other well-known plans maintain a disclaimer of being able to lose one to two pounds each week, Medifast maintains a disclaimer of 2 to 5 pounds per week. This amounts to the worst week on Medifast can be as good as the best week on any other weight loss plan on the market. Now that we have established the effectiveness of Medifast it needs to be stressed that although there are variations of the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan, such as the Medifast 4 & 2 Plan, the 5 & 1 Plan is the plan used by healthy individuals seeking fast and safe weight loss.
The important thing to understand when using the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan is that a person needs to eat every 2.5 to 3 hours, for the plan to be effective. The point of eating so often is what helps maintain a high metabolism while also maintaining a continuous and effective state of mild fat burning. By eating this often a person is saved from suffering cravings for carbohydrates (sweets) and rarely will suffer from hunger, after the initial three days of the program. During the course of a person’s waking hours it is essential that a meal be eaten every two to three hours.
The Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan requires that a total of six meals be eaten daily with the time-frame mentioned above. As mentioned earlier, 5 of the meals will consist of meals provided by Medifast. Those meals will consist of the commonly known shakes and the less commonly known additions that have been made over the last ten years. Medifast currently maintains over 70 meals to choose from with a selection that ranges well beyond just shakes to include stew, chili, pancakes, brownies and candy-like crunch bars. The unique and interesting fact about the meals formulated by Medifast is that all of the meals have very similar nutritional footprints. Whether a person is eating a Medifast Brownie, or a Medifast bowl of oatmeal, the calories and nutritional content are virtually the same.
During the course of an average day using the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan a person will consume 5 Medifast Meals and one non-Medifast Meal. With each Medifast Meal containing 20% of all the daily recommended nutrition a person needs, it is easy to see that at the end of a typical day a person has consumed 100% of the recommended needed nutrition. Receiving low-calorie and low-glycemic meals is the key to the continuous and substantial weight loss promised my Medifast. By receiving the needed vitamins and minerals, as well as the needed protein, a person will experience an increase in fat burn while yielding minimal muscle decay. The loss of muscle that is so common to weight loss surgery patients is not a side-effect of using Medifast. It has been proven that the weight that is lost through the use of Medifast contains less muscle-loss than those that have lost weight through mechanical intervention.
The absorption of all the essential vitamins, minerals and proteins with the 5 Medifast Meals is further complimented by the 1 meal that is not a Medifast Meal. That 1 meal is often referred to the Medifast Lean and Green Meal. This is the one meal that is a pleasant surprise to most people that utilize the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan for weight loss.
There are very strict requirements for the “1″ meal in the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan. This meal can be prepared easily at home or it can be tailored in virtually any restaurant that offers a waiter or a waitress. The Medifast 5 & 1 Meal will not be one that can be found in a fast food restaurant simply because most fast food establishments do not offer the nutrition needed in Medifast Meal Plans.
The Lean and Green portion of the 5 & 1 Meal Plan consists of two parts with one being “lean” and the other being “green.” The lean refers to the portion of the meal that is composed of lean meats. The green refers to the portion of the meal that is composed of vegetables. The selection of the lean and the green portions of the program are not only fairly abundant, but also in larger than expected quantities.
The Lean Portion
The lean portion of the meal refers to eating protein and that protein can be pork, chicken, fish or beef. The preparation of the protein can be in any manner, other than frying. When a person realizes how large a portion size is, there is often a scoff of disbelief. The portion sizes of the protein in a Medifast 5 & 1 Lean and Green Meal are as follows, and are listed as the weight AFTER the meat is cooked;
7 ounces of:
Fish, such as cod, flounder, haddock, orange, roughy, grouper, tilapia, mahi mahi, tuna (yellowfin steak or canned in water), wild catfish.
Shellfish: crab, scallop, shrimp, lobster.
Game Meat: deer,buffalo, elk.
Ground Turkey or other meat: > or = to 98% lean
6 ounces of:
Fish, such as swordfish, trout or halibut.
Chicken: breast or white meat, without skin.
Ground Turkey or other white meat: 95 to 97% lean.
Turkey: light meat
5 ounces of:
Fish: salmon, tuna (bluefin steak), farmed catfish, mackerel, herring.
Lean Beef: steak, roast, ground.
Pork Chop or pork tenderloin
Ground turkey, or other meat: 85 to 94% lean
Chicken or turkey: dark meat
As mentioned above the lean portion of the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan offers a liberal amount of food and what is selected is based upon providing an individual with the needed amounts of protein to allow a healthy and continuous fat burn. The protein that is consumed on the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan is one that facilitates the health and wellness that is unmatched by any other weight loss plan on the market today.

The green portion of the meal refers to the eating of the needed carbohydrates. Unlike other weight loss plans, Medifast recognizes the importance of consuming carbohydrates and include them in the daily intake of calories. The key difference is that Medifast makes the key and yet integral point of knowledge that includes only healthy carbohydrates provided through specific vegetables, in specific and defined quantities. Once again a person will be impressed by the wide and large selection of vegetables available. The quantity of the vegetable is often something that amazes most newcomers to the Medifast 5 & 1 Program.
When looking at the green portion of the 5 & 1 Plan it must be understood that it is necessary to ingest three complete servings as directed by the plan. There are essentially three groups of greens that are included in the plan with those groups being broken into the following categories.
Lower carbohydrate
Moderate carbohydrate
Higher carbohydrate
In each of the above mentioned groups there is a selection and quantity of foods that should be adhered to as follows;
The simple portioning concept of the plan makes it so a person can pick and choose whatever is the preferred choice. They can then mix and match to create a personal meal plan that can yield many different selections. A good example of “thinking outside the box” has been the Medifast spaghetti squash meal. This meal is a well known favorite of those that have been successful using Medifast.
Lower carbohydrates: 1 cup: collards (fresh / raw), endive, lettuce (green leaf, buterhead, iceberg, romaine), mustard greens, spinach (fresh / raw), spring mix, watercress.
1/2 cup: celery, cucumbers, white mushrooms, radishes, sprouts, (alpha, mung bean), turnip greens, argula, nopales, escarole, jalapeno (raw), Swiss chard (raw).
Moderate carbohydrates: 1/2 cup: Asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, fennel bulb, kale, portabella mushrooms, cooked spinach, summer squash (scallop or zucchini).
Higher carbohydrates: 1/2 cup: Broccoli, red cabbage, collard greens, mustard greens (cooked), green or wax beans, kohlrabi, okra, peppers, (any color), scallions, (raw), summer squash (crooked or straightneck), tomatoes (red, ripe), turnips, spaghetti squash, hearts of palm, jicama (cooked), Swiss chard (cooked).
The end result of being able to choose what lean meat will be eaten and what green vegetables will be chosen gives the Medifast user the option of keeping the meal plan full of variety and also flavorful. With the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal there is no reason for the diet to become boring. By mixing and matching selections, a Medifast user will be able to enjoy not only a large variety of food but also a selection that does not require a person to be hungry.
With the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal there is also a large selection of condiments and seasonings that are available to be added during the course of the day. In addition to those condiments and seasonings there is also the availability of healthy fat servings to round out the meal, and the menu for the day. In addition to the 5 & 1 Meal Plan there is also a small ability to add a snack, as long as it meets with the guidelines set forth by the Medifast Plan.
In closing, it needs to be stressed that Medifast maintains a continuous state of mild fat burning which is the reason why so many individuals have had success at losing amazing amounts of weight. The reason Medifast is able to achieve the high degree of success is because there is nothing in the plan that “kicks” a person out of the fat burning process. It is that fat burning process that helps to melt away the fat. When a person deviates from the plan the “damage” done to the fat burning process can set back a person for up to three days. That is why a person needs to have a high degree of commitment when attempting the Medifast 5 & 1 Weight Loss Plan. The positive results are possible to any healthy individual as long as they are committed to losing the weight. The Plan holds great promise as long as the commitment is being maintained.
Most people that are successful with the 5 & 1 Plan move on with their lives and yet always include Medifast in smaller portions because the nutrition and ease of the food is overwhelmingly convienient. Granted a person does not need to continue with Medifast forever, but the food is not only nutritious, convient and healthy…it is also pretty darn enjoyable….at least after the first three days of use. With the Medifast 5 & 1 Meal Plan the first three days tend to be the hardest and then after that the success rate increases rapidly.
Medifast Review
After having completed the Medifast Diet over one year and losing 115 pounds and being able to keep that weight off, I consider myself qualified to write an unbiased Medifast review. I lost my weight in five months but I actually still eat the food on a limited basis because I enjoy it so much. Looking back on the weight loss period of Medifast I have to say it was the easiest program I have ever tried…and I had tried many before I stumbled upon Medifast. My wife Sue has been able to lose over 80 pounds.
Medifast Diet: Does Medifast Really Work?
The question as to whether you can really lose 20 pounds in a month, as Medifast’s advertisements state, is likely the ultimate question in everyone’s mind. I agree that it sounds too good to be true and right away it leaves the potential customer a little skeptical. But I have seen first hand many people who have lost 20+ pounds in their first month. Now these were people who were significantly overweight to begin with. It is not realistic to think that if you only have 20 pounds to lose that you will lose it all in a month. Although everyone is different and every day I see more amazing things happen to people while they are on this diet.
What are Typical Results on the Medifast Diet?
Every diet company is required by law in the U.S. to state that results are not typical in their advertisements. But what is typical weight loss in a month for someone following the Medifast plan? The answer is partially dependant on how much weight a person has to lose, how closely they follow the diet plan, and their own personal metabolic rate.
I lost 29pounds in the first month and I didn’t deviate much from the plan. What little I did deviate was purely unintentional and exactly what I would change if I had it to do over again. An example of one simple thing I learned after a few weeks was that I learned how to measure (weigh) my vegetables, which was a major break through. I was perplexed by how to measure a serving of a vegetable (ie: lettuce) in a cup. Using a kitchen scale proved so much easier for me to do. The secret was knowing the weight equivalent of Medifast portion sizes of the vegetables.
How Does Medifast Work?
The most popular plan and the plan recommended by Medifast for the majority of customers is called the 5 and 1 Plan. The 5 means there are 5 prepackaged Medifast meals that you eat in a day. The 1 means there is one meal which they call Lean and Green, that you prepare yourself and eat every day. Generally the Lean and Green meal consists of a meat and a vegetable. The Medifast 5 and 1 plan is low calorie – approximately 800 to 1000 calories per day. It is low carb and Medifast recommends that you eat no more than 100 carbohydrates a day. It is also low fat, low sodium and low glycemic.
For those people who like to be mindful of their carbs, calories and fat, Medifast provides software that is accessible on their website. There is nothing to download and install on your computer. All you have to do is select the Medifast Foods you plan to eat that day and for which meal, and the software calculates everything for you. It allows you to keep a close eye on your calorie, fat, and carbohydrate intake if you wish. I never used their website because I saw no need, I just simply ate 5 medifast Meals and was pretty much done. That was easier than logging stuff into the computer. My wife loved the site…I guess the difference is what makes the program so effective and yet versatile.
Is Medifast Safe?
Medifast has been providing a clinically proven approach to weight loss and healthy nutrition for over 25 years. For most of those years, the Medifast Diet was only available through a doctor. That in itself says a great deal when doctors are eager to recommend a diet plan to their patients to ensure healthy nutrition while losing weight. To date over 20,000 physicians have recommended Medifast to their patients and Medifast has been used by over one million customers. In addition, Medifast does not contain any harmful herbs, additives, caffeine or other stimulants.
Are all the Testimonials Real? Where’s the Scientific Proof?
Most diet companies do not have clinical studies to backup their claims. However, Medifast heavily promotes the fact that a Johns Hopkins University study provides proof of significant and healthy weight loss in both men and women who followed the Medifast plan.
I can personally tell you that it has been my experience through my weight loss on Medifast, and other people that I’ve seen that the testimonials are indeed real. Medifast doesn’t have to fake testimonials, nor are they lacking in success stories. There are hundreds of successful Medifasters on their message boards who are dropping pounds every day.
How Much Does Medifast Cost?
The Medifast 5 and 1 plan costs approximately $300 a month. This cost is for the 5 Medifast meals provided for you. Your grocery bill per month will still include your 1 Lean and Green meal. But remember, your Lean and Green portions will likely be smaller than you are normally used to eating, so you’re out of pocket cost will be less. Your grocery bill at your local supermarket will go down.
Is the Cost Worth It?
In my honest opinion, the cost of the Medifast diet is certainly worth it. If you think about it, everything has been planned out for you. For a mere $300 a month, you are basically outsourcing most of your meal planning, nutritional research, meal preparations, etc. to Medifast. I agree that $300 is a bit expensive, if you look at it solely from a dollar figure. But is it really that expensive when you consider that you will be on the road to a healthier you, learning how to eat so you can maintain your weight after you lose weight, and all the time you are saving by outsourcing meal preparations, planning, grocery shopping, etc.? The cost of Medifast has often been referred to as “cost neutral” as you have to spend money on food regardless of what you choose.
If the cost scares you, don’t worry. When you purchase a month of Medifast food, be aware that there are different coupons and free offers that are available and always get the best price for Medifast. That’s 5 weeks of outsourcing someone else to make these calculations for you! All you need to do is follow the Medifast Quick Start Guideand the calories, carbs, and fat are all calculated for you. That’s the beauty of the prepackage food you receive on the Medifast Diet. Compare the Quick Start Guide with any 200+ page diet book on the market today, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy this plan is to understand and follow. Quite honestly the 20-page guide contains testimonials, photos and other information that isn’t directly related to the new Medifast Dieter. So there are far less than 20 pages to initially comprehend when starting the Medifast Program.
Keeping the Weight Off
Inside the Medifast Quick Start Guide dieters are provided with step-by-step instructions on what to do after reaching their weight loss goal. First there is a transition period of 6 to 8 weeks and then a maintenance period. If this scares you, don’t be too concerned. As with any diet, behavioral changes are required to keep the weight off. This is simply a fact of life and for some people like me it is the toughest part of the weight loss process. Through the Medifast Diet plan I have learned a great deal about myself, my eating habits, and in 5 months I discovered how much, when, where, and why I should eat. You see… the Medifast Diet isn’t just about losing weight. Medifast wants you to keep it off and they teach you how to keep the weight off. The Medifast plan teaches you things you never expected about yourself, so you can survive in the real world after you lose your weight.
It only makes sense if you think about it. Sure they will make a little more money if you put the pounds back on and have to start the program again. This is where most diets fail. The other diets don’t have a system setup to teach their dieters anything after the weight loss phase. If you lose weight and keep it off, hundreds of other people you come in contact with every day will notice and they will ask you how you did it. Word of mouth referrals with physical evidence of your transformation are the best form of free advertising for any company. When I lost my weight so quickly a few friends thought I had cancer or was really sick. The weight came off that fast for me!

Customer Service and Nutrition Support
What about Customer Service? I have had to call Medifast Customer Service only once in the last year. When I placed an early order, I forgot to enter the promotion code to get my 1 week of free Medifast Food. So I called and the customer service rep who was polite and knowledgeable about the problem. It was corrected and the situation was resolved in less than five minutes.
How many diets do you know of that has certified Nutritionists that you can call, email or communicate with on a message board? Medifast provides these options to their customers. I’ve submitted several questions to Nutrition Support through their customer message board and have received prompt answers that explicitly answered the questions. These were questions that didn’t require an immediate response, but knowing that if I did need assistance right away I could have called them on the phone is a tremendous amount of peace of mind.
Keep in mind that Medifast wants you to succeed in your weight loss and they want you to keep the weight off. I never felt like we were alone on this diet. Not only will you have a certified Nutritionist at your fingertips, but you will be able to communicate with hundreds of other people just like you, who are on the diet too.
Ordering, Shipping and Refunds With Medifast
Ordering is simple. You can order by phone or through their website. Either way it is fast and easy. My shipments arrive anywhere from 3 to 6 days after I place the order. Other than one shipment, the order has always come via UPS. That’s pretty quick and I have no complaints whatsoever. Everything arrives neatly packed with a packing slip and a return form, should I decide I don’t like a meal and want to send something back. I have never returned anything. I have created a quick video of what you can expect in your Medifast shipment. (Click here to see video: What to expect when ordering Medifast)
In Closing
I cannot express on this page just how much Medifast has changed the life of myself and my wife Sue. The program has given me back my health and it has given me back a lifestyle I did not even realize was gone. If you still doubt the program I will even offer my cell phone number for you to call. I work in big box retail, in the Central Time Zone, and if you call me I will answer, or I will return your call as fast as I can.
Do not let the quality of life slip further away. Weight loss no longer has to be a life-time endeavor. Use Medifast and just get it done. I lost 115 pounds in about 5 months and I feel great! Call me if you doubt yourself because I would love to show you that you too can make it happen. Good luck and may God bless you!

Medifast Prices
Medifast prices are pretty straight forward. Since I have been “observing” many weight loss programs over the past few years I can tell you there is a direct relationship to the pricing of the product and the trustworthiness of the company behind the scenes. What I mean by this is that the cost, or the pricing of a product that is easy to understand, and straight forward, is more often than not the more reputable organization. With the Medifast prices, there is absolutely NO gray area that is hidden between the lines.
With Medifast prices you get what you see. There is no razzle-dazzle or “call now” pricing that you need to take advantage of in the next ten minutes. When one looks at getting started with Medifast there is nothing special to understand that will get you a better deal. There is not one website out here in cyberspace that will get you a better price than the next website. Medifast does this for reasons that go well beyond the scope of the traditional Medifast Diet Program, and is discussed on our other website that goes into greater detail. (Our Weight Loss Story) Suffice it to say, the Medifast pricing structure is rigid and non-flexible, other than two coupons and the VIP Club. In a way the Medifast pricing is a well defined Medifast Law that does not vary AT ALL.
What you, the reader need to understand that the price structure for Medifast is set in stone and it does not matter where you come from, or what organization you may represent. The same price for Medifast food will be paid. As a person does their research about Medifast they will quickly see many different websites that offer coupons or deals that appear as if they have a secret that is only a mouse click away.
The truth about Medifast prices is that the most important thing to decide is how long you want to try the weight loss program. Do you you want to try it for two weeks or 28 days or two months? Longer? This question is really where you need to decide because the duration of use will determine the best price. So as you search for Medifast prices…are you not really searching for the best price?
If you want the best price for Medifast, and want to use it for one month or less, the best thing to do is use a coupon. If you want to use it for more than 28 days, then the only correct choice would be to join the VIP Club. I could go into greater detail about Medifast prices, but I would simply be writing in circles, because the prices are what they are. If you want a detailed explanation of Medifast prices, take a look at another article (on this website) that goes into greater explanation, while discussing the current two coupon codes that are being used for this month.
It is strongly suggested you try Medifast for at least 28 days simply because you will need that much time to really get into the program. Some people have tried it for two weeks and soon learned that they regretted only two weeks because they hated having to get out of fat burning, while they waited for their next order. Only after 28 days will a person realize the FULL potential and promise of the program.
When you go to the Medifast Official Site you simply need to know if you want to use the program for two week,s or 28 days (1 month) or longer. Plan on losing weight*, do the math and start your journey. The price for Medifast is no great mystery and it is designed to be that way.
